Waitr to Cut 500 Jobs in Alabama Amid Massive Layoffs
The third-party food delivery service Waitr is cutting almost 500 jobs across Alabama amid a corporate restructuring that will lead to thousands more layoffs nationwide.
The beleaguered company filed a WARN Notice with the Alabama Department of Commerce earlier this month, notifying the state agency that they will cut 491 jobs statewide. The layoffs are scheduled to take place in April.
The Lake Charles, Louisiana company is faring no better in its home state, where Waitr recently announced 2,300 layoffs also expected to occur in April.
In the Bayou State, Waitr explained that they planned to cut all hourly and salaried driver positions and allow anyone who wanted to stay on with the company to do so as independent contractors who are paid for each delivery they make instead of earning a salary or hourly pay.
Some reports there estimate the changes will effect 13,000 total drivers nationwide.
If the cuts in Alabama mirror what is happening in Louisiana, the changes will effect every driver in the state.
Another 219 layoffs are planned for Waitr drivers in Texas, according to that state's WARN list.
Multiple efforts to reach Waitr's Media Relations director or their Vice President of Human Relations for this report were unsuccessful.
