The City of Tuscaloosa voted to award almost $1 million in funding to three local agencies, including money for the ELEVATE Athletic Excellence Fund, which will aim to boost the salaries of coaches in Tuscaloosa City Schools.

The funding will support TCS, Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.

The city voted to give $500,000 to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education for the athletic excellence fund, which was first introduced by Mayor Walt Maddox in September and would give raises to teachers who serve as athletic coaches.

The Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority will receive $235,000 to make capital improvements to Bowers Park for the Dixie Youth World Series, which is slated to take place in Tuscaloosa in August 2023.

The announcement of the World Series was made following the Alabama Dixie Youth Baseball Division II tournament, which was hosted locally for the fourth time in July 2022.

The city will also give the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama $175,000 "to provide professional consulting and related services for economic development, which began in October and will run until September 30, 2023.
