AL State Nurses Association Elects First Black President
I believe that nurses are the true spirit of a health care system. I’ve had my fair share of encounters with nurses while being a caregiver to my parents. Not only do nurses provide medical attention, but they also offer comfort as well. Nurses are amazing.
In exciting news, Dr. Lindsey Harris will be inducted as the president of the Alabama State Nurses Association at the annual convention on September 25, 2020. This is monumental news because Dr. Harris will be making history.
Dr. Harris feels that this accomplishment is a reflection of her work over the years. As we chatted today, we discussed the importance of mentorship, work ethic, and diversity. She feels that being the first president of color in 107 years is an achievement and hopes that this type of achievement becomes the norm.
In her new role, she wants her perseverance to be a reminder to all that by “working hard, you can be anything and break barriers.”
Dr. Harris felt that as a Black woman, her journey to this position is about change, progression, and forward motion. It excites her that she can be that person to inspire someone else to pursue their dreams.
In finding out more about Dr. Harris, her nursing background has been centered in Alabama. She has an impressive educational experience, receiving her Bachelor of Science from Samford University. She completed the Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a concentration in Family Practice. Also, Dr. Harris completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2016.
Dr. Harris started her nursing career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. She is currently the Inpatient Glycemic Control Nurse Practitioner on the Inpatient Glycemic Management team within the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital.
Also, Dr. Harris has been the Immediate Past President of the Birmingham Black Nurses Association Inc. She also remains an advocate for nursing as she holds office in the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama. Her nursing career has been dedicated to promoting the profession of nursing during these ever-changing times and improving outcomes for those we serve.
She holds many accolades throughout her nursing career. Some of her awards are from the National Black Nurses Association as the National Black Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year, the Living Legacy Award from Samford University, and the Joann Barnett Compassionate Care Award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing.
