The Alabama Crimson Tide participated once again in the College Football Playoffs this year. For some reason, there was a huge dip in TV ratings for the semi-finals this year.

In 2021, the College Football Playoffs Semi-final games featured The Alabama Crimson Tide against Cincinnati and Georgia against Michigan.

The Alabama-Cincinnati game garnered 16.1 million views. The Georgia-Michigan game garnered slightly more with 16.5 million viewers. Although these numbers may seem large, in comparison to the previous year, they are significantly lower.

In 2020, Alabama faced off against Notre Dame in the semi-finals and the game received 18.9 million viewers. The Ohio and Clemson game topped those numbers with 19.1 million viewers.

College football fans all over are wondering what happened. What contributed to the drop in viewership?

Fans didn’t hesitate to tweet their thoughts on the dip in viewership.  Many think that the difference in viewers comes from the date change. In 2020, the semi-finals were held on New Year’s Day. This year the semi-finals were held on NYE and people were not excited about it.

“Feel like it should be moved to New Years Day. Everyone is in full party mode NYE. Would love nothing more to watch the Semifinals New Year’s Day after a long night of drinking before. Makes too much sense.”  Said one fan.

Other fans seem to think that the decline could have be caused by the pandemic.

With this year’s College Football championship being a rematch of the semi-finals, do you think the viewership will be better or worse than the year before?
