Stay Weather Aware: Alabama Expects a Strong-Severe Storm Threat Thursday

We have tracked the potential for severe weather in our area for several days. The likelihood of thunderstorms escalating to strong to severe levels is expected to occur overnight into early morning on Thursday, then spanning into Friday.

Now, we are focused on two different rounds of severe weather for Thursday. Here is a breakdown of important weather information.

Round 1 Details

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said, “An organized batch of thunderstorms will move into the Tennessee Valley of North Alabama after midnight tonight... it will drift southward through the morning hours.”

Risk Areas and Threats

The Townsquare Media Coverage Area is split between a slight and marginal risk zone. The main concerns are “damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail,” said the National Weather Service in Birmingham.

General Timing

The overall timing for round 1 is between 1 a.m. Thursday through 7 p.m. Thursday. For our Townsquare Media Coverage Area, we are also split with the outlook on the time zones.

Storms “will reach the I-59/20 corridor (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden) around mid-morning,” said Spann.

Round 2 Outlook

“More showers and storms could develop late tomorrow and tomorrow night as a cold front pushes into the state; small hail and gusty winds will be possible, but the overall severe weather threat with this activity is not especially high since the air will be worked over by the rain earlier in the day,” said Spann.
