City of Tuscaloosa Hosting 11th Annual Tuscaloosa Mayor’s Cup April 29
We're again proud to team up with the City of Tuscaloosa for the 11th Annual Tuscaloosa Mayor’s Cup benefiting the Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative on Saturday April 29th.
The race will start and end at Government Plaza behind City Hall. The route will go through downtown and cross through the Walk of Champions on the University of Alabama campus.
In its 11th year, the 5K has raised more than $211,000 for the Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative. Mayor Walt Maddox and the City Council established a Pre-K Task Force in 2005 with the belief that all academically at-risk four-year-old children deserve a highly effective pre-k education. The Task Force evolved into the Tuscaloosa Pre-K Initiative and now serves more than 250 at-risk preschool students.
Mayor Walt Maddox said,
The Mayor's Cup is a fun way for the entire community to support education in Tuscaloosa. With over 1,500 participants last year, we are making a difference with every stride we take while upholding our core beliefs.
Since the inaugural Mayor’s Cup in 2007, all proceeds from the race go toward the Pre-K Initiative. These funds provide resources for at-risk preschoolers in the Tuscaloosa area. As a result, pre-k students are more prepared for kindergarten and have a higher rate of success throughout their entire scholastic careers.
There will be an after-race event, dubbed Post-K, where certain downtown businesses will provide deals on merchandise, food and drinks to participants who present their race bibs. For more information regarding participating businesses, CLICK HERE.
The Mayor’s Cup 5K and 10K is a Grand Prix event registered with the Tuscaloosa Track Club, and awards will be given. Timing chips attached to race bibs will be used to determine race results. Registrants receive a performance race t-shirt and a potential to win door prizes. There will also be family-friendly activities on site, including photo opportunities and a DJ to play upbeat tunes after the race.
The registration fee for the 5k is $20 now until March 31 and will increase to $25 April 1-29. The registration fee for the 10k is $30 now until March 31 and increase to $35 April 1-29.
