The long awaited SEC season is scheduled to kick off in 24 days and it is becoming crunch time for players who are considering whether they will play or not this season. The LSU Tigers have seen a number of players recently make the choice to opt out, highlighted by receiver Ja'Marr Chase. Today at the University of Georgia, graduate transfer quarterback Jamie Newman has announced he will opt out of the season and instead prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Newman transferred to Georgia from Wake Forrest with the intent of leading the Bulldogs after the departure of Jake Fromm. Newman passed for 3,959 yards 35 touchdowns and 16 interceptions during his time as a Demon Deacon. He also rushed for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns.

USC transfer JT Daniels will now likely start for the Bulldogs in 2020. Daniels transferred to Athens after Newman had already arrived and received a waiver from the NCAA for immediate eligibility. Daniels passed for 2,887 yards 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in one season starting for the Trojans.

Newman is a 6-foot-3 220 pound quarterback and was a three-star recruit out of Graham High School in Graham North Carolina. He will be fighting for draft position with several other quarterbacks in the 2021 draft, such as Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and Trey Lance.

True freshman Carson Beck will likely assume the backup role for Georgia with the departure of Newman. Beck is a four-star prospect out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville Florida.
