Tornados Win Final Region Game of the Year
The Pickens County Tornados (7-2, 6-1) defeated the South Lamar Stallions (1-8, 1-6) 26-6 tonight at home in the final region contest of the year for both schools.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first quarter but the Tornadoes stepped up in the second quarter to seize control of the game. Junior quarterback Javion Belle found K.J. Byrd on a 22-yard pass to capture the lead.
Pickens County was challenged late in the half by the Stallions who found their way to the Tornados' goaline after a 50-yard run by junior tailback E.J. Wilson. Pickens County's defense held strong on four consecutive plays to keep the Stallions out of the endzone and maintain control of the game.
The second half was controlled by Pickens County who will finish second in the region with tonight's victory. Belle found Santonio Jones Jr. on a 35-yard pass to put the Tornados up 12-0. From then it was the Adonta Warner show for Pickens County.
Warner scored on runs of 22 and 61 yards impressing the crowd. His first touchdown run, Warner tiptoed down the sidelines to stay in bounds and scamper into the endzone. His second was even more impressive as he bulled through the Stallions defenders losing both his cleats in the process. Warner finished with 109 yards and the two scores.
Pickens County head coach Michael Williams was quick to point out that his Tornados still have things to improve upon.
"Sloppy, sloppy. We have a couple people out, a couple big name guys out so had us some younger guys step up so we had to go in at halftime and get a little horse and we came out and semi performed in the second half," said Williams.
The Stallions were led by junior defensive back, running back and kick returner Austin Bush. Bush hauled in two interceptions to set his offense up with good field position, he made several defensive tackles and contributed 16 yards rushing offensively. Bush really stood out on a kick return as he scored the Stallions only touchdown on a 65-yard return in which he faked a reverse to a teammate.
Pickens County will host Gordo next week in the final game of the regular season for both schools.
South Lamar will travel to Sulligent in its final game of the season.
