The Gordo Greenwave (6-2, 4-1) pitching a shut-out for the second straight week defeated the Fayette County Tigers (4-4, 3-2) 27-0 to secure sole possession of second place in Class 4A Region 5.

Gordo started the game off hot, scoring on its first possession of the contest on a six-play drive that concluded with a Tanner Bailey touchdown pass to Lawson Neel. Bailey played well against a region rival completing 17-of-26 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.

"Tanner is Tanner. He's a great football player for what he's able to do for our team you can't even really put it into words. He's going to compete, he's going to prepare and he's going to play. He did a great job again tonight making plays and just being the leader of our offense," said Gordo head coach Ryan Lolley.

Gordo remained in control the entire game, however the score could have been much wider had the Fayette County Tigers not stopped the Greenwave on four different occasions inside the 10-yard line. The Tigers stopped Gordo twice on fourth down in the first half and forced two second half turnovers to keep the score respectable.

Gordo was able to get into the endzone for the second time on the evening just before halftime when Bailey connected with senior Ben Capps for a 68-yard touchdown. Capps paced the Greenwave with four receptions for 137 yards and the touchdown, defensively he made eight tackles and hauled in an interception.

Bailey and junior running back Rayshawn Williams picked up right where they left off in the second half driving all the way down to the redzone, however an interception kept Gordo from extending its lead. Williams carried the load for Gordo, controlling the clock and pace of the game taking 12 carries for 100 yards.

The Greenwave didn't waste any time on its next possession, scoring a one-play, 38-yard touchdown on a pass from Bailey to Neel. Neal exited the game in the first half with an ankle injury but pushed through the pain to contribute to his team. He caught four passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

"It's my senior year, I'm not wanting to be a selfish person, my senior year I wanted to play in every game and I know the team needs me in every way possible so I just tried so suck it up and play." said Neel

Bailey and the Greenwave's final score of the night came in the third quarter when junior Kohl Summerville cashed in a 31-yard touchdown reception. Summerville finished with four receptions for 64 yards and the score.

Gordo has two games remaining and is preparing to try to make another deep run in the Class 4A playoffs after making it all the way to the title game in 2020.

"We're nowhere near where we can be. I think we've obviously gotten better throughout the year. One of our coaches, coach Chapman, he always talks about climbing, trying to get better each and every week, each and every play and I think that's the focus of our team," said Lolley. "You want to get better each and every day in practice and I think we've really had four weeks of great practice and I think it's starting to show. We just gotta keep working, keep chopping and not get comfortable."

Gordo will be on the road taking on the Curry Yellow Jackets (0-7, 0-4) on Oct. 22 to conclude region play before finishing up with crosstown rival Pickens County on Oct. 28.
