The Tuscaloosa City Schools system has launched an initiative to honor students of character at their 21 schools through a new partnership with Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa.

The news came during a ceremony Tuesday evening to honor three Tuscaloosa City Schools that were awarded the "National School of Character" distinction in May.

TCS's objective with the newly designed program is to highlight and honor students at every school in the district who "display an 'ethic of caring,' responsibility and other ideals" taught in the character instruction.

The school system and Townsquare Media, which owns and operates eight local radio stations and a news website in the area, will honor a "Character Student of the Month" with an award and treats. The students will be also highlighted in an on-air broadcast on one or more of the company's radio brands and in a feature story on the Tuscaloosa Thread.

Dr. Jessica Constant, coordinator of student services and School of Character district facilitator said she is "extremely excited that this will give all students the opportunity to participate in showing great character in all that they do."

The school system will honor students at every school in the district, with two to three students being recognized each month, beginning in September through May.

The school system plans to host a "Character Banquet" in May to honor the 21 "Character Students of the Month" selected during the school year as well as any TCS schools that may receive new state or national Character School recognition.

TCS superintendent Dr. Mike Daria said the partnership is a great way to publicly recognize the work that everyone in the district is doing in developing character.

"This partnership is fabulous because it supports and affirms the world we're doing in developing character in the school system. Working with Townsquare allows us to really celebrate that and communicate that widely to our community.

David Dubose, TSM Tuscaloosa's market president, said the company is excited to help honor students in Tuscaloosa City Schools who demonstrate strong character and leadership at their schools.

"We believe in the importance of good character in our everyday life and our entire team looks forward to learning more about the rising stars in the Tuscaloosa City School system," Dubose said.

Editor's Note: Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa is the parent company of this website, the Tuscaloosa Thread, which will also participate in the new program.
