A tornado devastated Fultondale Monday night, damaging dozens of homes and businesses in the city just north of Birmingham.

Emergency crews are currently surveying damage and assisting with search and rescue efforts. As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, one death has been confirmed. 11 people were treated for injuries at the scene last night and another 17 were taken to the hospital.

Over 20 homes were destroyed in the area of New Castle Road.

Photos shared to social media show how damaging the tornado was to the Fultondale community.

Crews from the National Weather Service in Birmingham will be out today to survey damage and assess the strength of the tornado.
