The University of Alabama's Moody Music Building suffered extensive damage to its roof system during a Sunday evening fire that was only officially extinguished Monday morning.

In an update posted to social media, the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue service said more than 50 firefighters responded to the conflagration and struggled to access the roof because of heavy rain Sunday night.

Eventually, firefighters were able to cut a hole in the roof, access the location of the fire and combat it more effectively.

"The department was able to mitigate damage and salvage many valuable assets from the building," the post said. "The fire was declared out at 9:22 a.m. on April 20th."

Mayor Walt Maddox also said Sunday night that many uniforms and instruments belonging to the University's Million Dollar Band were thankfully saved from ruin.

The fire department said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined and is still under investigation.
