Legendary Alabama Wrestler and Former UA Coach ‘Cullman Comet’ Dies
Tom 'Cullman Comet' Drake, attorney, professional wrestler, politician, and member of the athletic staff of legendary football coach "Bear" Bryant has died.
Born in Falkville, Alabama in 1930, Drake went to high school in Cullman. After graduating he obtained an athletic scholarship and played football for the Chattanooga Mocs. He was then drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he played until being drafted into the US Army. After an honorable discharge, he went on to become the head wrestling coach at the University of Alabama and member of Coach Bryant's athletic staff.
Drake studied law at UA where he successfully campaigned for a seat in the Alabama Legislature and represented Cullman County for 32 years.
The 'Cullman Comet,' as he was known while wrestling professionally, also practiced personal injury law and general civil law for over 48 years.
Sadly, Drake passed away on Thursday at the age of 86.
