BREAKING: Tuscaloosa Police Report Officer-Involved Shooting at Bower’s Park

Police in Tuscaloosa have shot a person in the area of Bowers Park Wednesday afternoon.

Few details were available at 12:30 p.m., but Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, has confirmed the shooting and said more details will be available soon.

Entrance to the park is blocked off and a major police presence remains on the scene, including TPD chief Brent Blankley and members of the VCU, as well as officers from just about every local police agency - TPD, UAPD, the sheriff's office and State Troopers were all there.

Kennedy told local media at 1:30 that he will not be prepared to make a statement for some time.

He said because a Tuscaloosa Police officer was involved in the shooting, it will be investigated by VCU members who are not employed by or affiliated with TPD.

Although Kennedy and the VCU have not officially confirmed the shooting was fatal, there were indications visible at the scene that investigators were working around a body.

UPDATE, 2:15 P.M.: A Tuscaloosa Police spokeswoman has confirmed the shooting was deadly.

"At 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, two Tuscaloosa Police officers initiated a traffic stop as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation," Stephanie Taylor said. "The driver pulled over on James I. Harrison Parkway near Hargrove Road. Shots were fired during the interaction, resulting in the death of a passenger. The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit are conducting the investigation."
