What is the FORTIFIED Roof™ Program?

This initiative aims to provide wind mitigation for existing, owner-occupied, single-family homes in our service area. The program is funded by the insurance industry and ensures that the work completed on your home meets the rigorous FORTIFIED Roof™ standard. For detailed information about FORTIFIED roofs, visit www.fortifiedhome.org.

Benefits of a FORTIFIED Roof™

Opting for a FORTIFIED Roof™ designation not only enhances the safety and durability of your home but can also yield financial benefits. Homes with this designation may qualify for discounts on the wind portion of homeowner’s insurance. Moreover, recent research conducted by The University of Alabama indicates that homes with a FORTIFIED Roof™ sell for approximately 7% more than those without.

Grant Eligibility

Before applying, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Your home must be situated in Greene, Hale, Pickens, or Tuscaloosa County.

  • The home must have a permanent foundation (mobile and manufactured homes are not eligible).
  • Townhomes, duplexes, and condos are also not eligible.
  • The home must be structurally sound and in good condition.

  • Your name must be on the deed to the home.
  • You must currently reside in the home as your primary residence.
  • Mortgage ownership is acceptable as long as your name is on the deed.

  • Household income (before taxes and other deductions) must not exceed the program maximum.

Is There a Cost If I Receive The Grant?

Habitat for Humanity does not charge an application fee. However, if approved, you will be asked to cover the following costs before work commences:

  • $300 for outside inspections to certify your new roof meets the FORTIFIED standard.
  • Any expenses exceeding the $10,000 grant for roof replacement.
  • Habitat typically obtains three bids from qualified contractors and selects the lowest bid.
  • If the cost exceeds the grant amount, financing options are available through a partnership with a local credit union.

If you are unable to cover the fees, you have the option to decline and withdraw your application.
