Tuscaloosa Honors More Than 90 City Employees
More than 90 City of Tuscaloosa employees were recognized for their service, leadership and performance during the city’s fifth annual Employee Excellence Awards.
The ceremony was held Friday, Sept. 18, at the Tuscaloosa River Market and highlighted employees across multiple city departments who have demonstrated achievement and commitment in their roles.

The Employee Excellence Awards program was created to recognize City of Tuscaloosa employees for exemplary individual achievement, contributions and job performance.
“I continue to be impressed by the talented employees who go above and beyond in service to our City and their peers,” Mayor Walt Maddox said. “The dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment of these individuals exemplify what it means to be a true public servant.”
Employees were recognized across several categories, including 25, 30 and 35 years of service, Cheers for Peers, Excellence Awards, Mayor’s Excellence Awards and Emerging Leaders.
The Emerging Leaders category is designed to identify and develop the next generation of leaders within the City of Tuscaloosa workforce.
City officials said the annual ceremony also provides an opportunity to recognize employees whose work may not always receive public attention but plays an important role in city operations and services.
“The Employee Excellence Awards has become one of my favorite traditions,” Chief Human Resources Officer LaShonda Kemp said. “Each year, I look forward to shining a light on more of our incredible employees and their commitment to the City.”
Kemp added that much of the work performed by city employees can go unnoticed, making the annual recognition particularly meaningful.
More than 90 employees received recognition during this year’s event, continuing a program that has now been held for five consecutive years.
Maddox said the employees’ contributions help make Tuscaloosa a community residents can be proud of and said it is an honor to work alongside them.
The City of Tuscaloosa did not include a complete list of the individual award recipients in the information provided.
