Folks say that Atlanta is the Hollywood of the South, but don't forget Alabama!

Some big-name movies have been filmed here in the Yellowhammer State, including some familiar classics.

But here's an updated list with movies from the 2010's and even one from 2020!

Classic Movies

If you ain't first, you're last. Released in 2006, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" became an instant hit.

Although set in--and named after--the iconic racetrack, most of the movie was actually filmed in North Carolina.

According to IMDb, though, several of the scenes did get shot on location at the Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama.

Matthew McConaughey is no stranger to filming in Alabama, and this movie saw him film in a couple places around the state.

The mid-2000's romcom features scenes shot both in Leesburg and Gadsden, Alabama, says IMDb.

New Movies

Enough of the 2000's though! Here are some newer additions to the list of movies shot right here in Alabama.

"Selma" (2014) depicts the historical civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery.

This movie features on-site scenes at the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, as well as several shots in Montgomery.

"Get Out" (2017) is a dark comedy/thriller about a man who has some bad experiences with a creepy family.

Most of the movie was shot in Fairhope and Mobile, and IMDb notes the opening abduction scene was shot right on Ryan Avenue in Mobile, AL!

"Just Mercy" 2019 is a legal drama about a young attorney who defends poor people on death row.

The biographical film takes place in the state of Alabama, so many scenes were shot right in Montgomery.

"USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage" (2016) is a war/action film starring the one and only Nicolas Cage.

IMDb notes that the USS Alabama down in Mobile, AL was used for both the interior and exterior of the ship. Orange Beach and Battleship Park were also featured.

"The Devil All the Time" (2020) is a psychological thriller about several characters dealing with their lives in a post-WWII society.

According to IMDb, this movie was shot all over Alabama! Scenes were filmed in Montevallo, Anniston, Jacksonville, Wetumpka, Birmingham, Helena, Deatsville, Pell City, and even Oak Mountain State Park!

So the next time you go outside, you might just be walking onto a film set. Keep an eye out!
