Georgia QB Room Continues To Reorient
The carousel at the University of Georgia's starting quarterback position has been a joyous sight to see for many SEC fans in 2020. However, as the Bulldogs have managed to string together two straight victories under sophomore transfer JT Daniels, it seems that HC Kirby Smart has decided in which direction UGA will head in as far as their quarterback room.
Now on their third quarterback through just seven games of the SEC-only 2020 schedule, the carousel may be coming to a halt as JT Daniels' last two outings have produced six touchdowns and one interception with almost 550 passing yards. The Bulldogs, at the outset of the season, initially had intended to start the second-year man, QB D'Wan Mathis, after a position battle in the offseason.
After not seeing time on the field in the past two consecutive games, it was announced late Saturday evening that redshirt freshman D'Wan Mathis would leave the University of Georgia and enter the NCAA's athlete transfer portal. Mathis, a Michigan native, only earned time in four games during his tenure with the Bulldogs, all of which came in the truncated 2020 SEC season. He didn't see any playing time during his first season in Athens, GA, and his second campaign was lackluster at best. His final career stats for the Bulldogs include one touchdown and three interceptions from a 40% completion rate (12 of 30).
Due to an NCAA decision in August of 2020 concerning the course of action for playing during the COVID-19 pandemic, D'wan Mathis will be able to transfer and retain this year of eligibility to give him four seasons left at whichever school he lands at.
