Netflix Series Based on Dolly Parton’s Songs Coming in 2019
Dolly Parton is getting her own Netflix series. The country icon is partnering with Warner Bros. for a set of made-for-TV films, to premiere on the movie and television streaming platform in 2019.
Each of Parton's Netflix films will be based on a different one of her songs; she'll also appear in select episodes. The series is a collaboration between Warner Bros. and Parton's Dixie Pixie Productions; she's executive producing the series.
"As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music. I am thrilled to be bringing some of my favorite songs to life with Netflix," Parton says in a press release. "We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations."
Parton previously teamed with Warner Bros. for two made-for-TV movies, Coat of Many Colors and Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love, both of which aired on NBC, in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Thirteen million people tuned in to watch Coat of Many Colors, and Christmas of Many Colors earned 11.4 million viewers and a 1.8 ratings share in the adults 18-49 years of age demographic, putting the film at the top of viewership in terms of total viewers.
Alyvia Alyn Lind portrayed a young Parton in both Coat of Many Colors and Christmas of Many Colors, while Jennifer Nettles and Ricky Schroder played Parton's parents. It's unclear if they will revise their roles for the Netflix series.
Parton was reportedly also working on another made-for-TV movie, based on her song “Jolene,” though further details about that project have not yet been revealed. Parton herself is no stranger to acting: She has appeared in several award-winning films, including 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and Joyful Noise. She made a cameo in Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love as well.
