These Should-Have-Been Country Hits Were Ahead of Their Time
Have you ever just loved a song from a newer, more progressive artist that just didn't hit? Sometimes certain songs just don't get their due, and a lot of the time it has to do with timing. Even Chris Stapleton didn't hit the ball out of the park his first time at bat.
In this week's episode of That's What She Said, Ania Hammar takes a look back at several country songs that underperformed at country radio when they were released, but could very well post big numbers on the scoreboard if they were released in today's radio environment.
Love & Theft are another country act who've had mainstream hits, but their 2012 single "Runnin' Out of Air" just didn't catch on at country radio at the time. You can hear the same kind of vibe on some of Thomas Rhett's records these days, but maybe it was just a case of wrong place, wrong time. Kelleigh Bannen really pushed the country music envelope in "Famous" in 2014. The heavy beat behind the track was pretty extreme at the time, but it wouldn't be out of place at country radio today.
Are there other songs you think should have been country hits that weren't? Let us know in the comments below! Hammar also spoke to Luke Combs about his crazy year of unprecedented success.
