“Just proud of our team, this time of year to still be playing is a compliment to their energy and effort,” said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. “I thought we had a lot of different people step up and make plays all night.”
After the Cougars opened the game up with a three-pointer, the Tide responded with an 11-0 run grabbing the momentum in Coleman Coliseum early. The Tide continued to find success offensively, taking a 24-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Houston started to find some rhythm in the second quarter, shooting 66.7% from the floor. The Cougars would take a late lead, but Alabama’s Megan Abrams hit a triple at the buzzer, tying the game at 40 right before the half.
After a slow start to the second half for both teams, the Tide hit fourteen free-throws in the third quarter outscoring the Cougars 22-6. The Tide took a 62-46 lead into the final frame.
Houston battled back to cut the Alabama lead to single digits, 69-60, with 5:26 left in the fourth quarter, but that is the closest they would get for the remainder of the game. The Tide closed the game with a pair of three-pointers and six free-throws, securing the 79-64 win.
Three Alabama players scored in double figures including Megan Abrams (18), Brittany Davis (18), and JaMya Mingo-Young (17).
Up next, Alabama travels to South Dakota State for the WNIT Elite Eight on Sunday.
