U.S. Dog Tested Positive For The Virus That Causes COVID-19

As we are dealing with what could possibly be a new normal for society with social distancing, heightened hand washing practices, and face coverings in public.  Now, it is believed that the first dog has tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 in humans.  According to TIME, The dog belonged to a family participating in Duke’s Molecular and Epidemiological Study of Suspected Infection (MESSI), an ongoing research study, which examines how the body responds to infection.”  Apparently, the owners of the North Carolina dog work in the medical field and have close interaction with the dog.  According to the CDC, “At this time, there is no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus that causes COVID-19.”  Also, the CDC makes this recommendation as well, to “treat pets as you would other human family members – do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household. If a person inside the household becomes sick, isolate that person from everyone else, including pets.”  So, pets should be social distancing as well.  I guess we have to add that into our “new normal.”
