Tips On How To Protect Your Home During COVID-19
Each day we are witnessing more and more cases of COVID-19 in Alabama, around the United States, and the World. The World Health Organization stated that they are “working 24/7 to analyse data, provide advice, coordinate with partners, help countries prepare, increase supplies, and manage expert network.”
I wanted to share some tips on how to protect your home during this COVID-19 pandemic. There has been lots of advice on how to spot symptoms, how to protect yourself, but what about your home. I talk about my parents all the time, passing on their advice to others. They taught me so much. All I know is that my mother was a stickler about washing your hands (all the time). When I would come home from school, doing my school work, before/after dinner, basically doing anything, it was always “Wash your hands, Mary.” But, what about the home during this COVID-19 time. My mother would follow useful disinfecting tips for the home as well. Here are some great tips I located from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and “Ian McKeag, M.D., a family and community medicine physician at UAB, says now is the time to disinfect and clean your home. Use isopropyl alcohol, or disinfecting wipes, to wipe down countertops and common areas. Keep the surfaces of your home clean, especially areas where you eat and spend the most time.”
Here are some additional tips from my childhood. My mother would tell you, “anything you touch with your hands should be disinfected.” For example, doorknobs, toilet handles, faucet handles, car steering wheel, remotes, refrigerator door handles, cabinet handles. She would lightly spray a disinfectant spray or a cloth soaked with isopropyl alcohol. Don't forget to clean your hands after you pump gas too. Also, she would make us leave our shoes at the door. And made me wash our bed linens frequently. I'm glad my mother taught me these tips at a young age.
