Reba McEntire’s ‘Fancy’ Inspires Broadway Musical
Fancy’s mother would be proud of her for this one. The fictional 16-year-old Louisiana girl in Reba McEntire’s iconic 1991 hit “Fancy” will soon be the focus of a Broadway musical, according to Broadway World.
In mid-March, theater producer Margot Astrachan and the Peccadillo Theater Company in New York City will present Fancy, the story of a poor young girl whose mother encourages her into a life as a courtesan to escape poverty.
The musical features “Fancy” (originally written and performed by Bobbie Gentry in 1969 before McEntire recorded her cover) as the title track, as well as a mix of female country anthems such as Loretta Lynn‘s “Don’t Come Home a ’Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind),” Bonnie Raitt‘s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” Carrie Underwood‘s “Before He Cheats” and Gretchen Wilson‘s “Redneck Woman.”
Reba McEntire Opens Up About the New Song That Made Her Cry
Famous songs by Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, Randy Travis, Merle Haggard, George Strait and Alabama are also incorporated into the musical.
"Fancy is a new American musical that brings together some of the all-time greatest crossover country songs onstage with some of the theater’s brightest talents," says Astrachan in a press release. "We’re looking forward to this developmental presentation and hope it will inspire producing partners to join us as we look to a production at a major regional theatre company prior to a New York production and national tour."
The developmental production of Fancy debuts March 16 and 17 at the Westside Theatre in New York City.
