A new study finds that Alabama is the 6th poorest state in the country. In addition, the southern portions of west Alabama are some of the poorest areas in the state. This is all according to a non-profit organization called Alabama Possible.

The organization recently released it's 2017 Poverty Fact Sheet. Among the discoveries,   the report also revealed that 20 percent of Tuscaloosa County residents live BELOW the poverty line. However, things are even worse in Perry County, where 40 percent of the population lives in poverty. In Greene County, that number is not much better with 38 percent, and for Lamar County Residents, that number is 25 percent.

Sources believe that Alabama has been slower to recover from the Great Recession than the country in general with the Alabama poverty rate at 18.5 percent, while the national average is 14.7 percent.

If it's any consolation, Tuscaloosa is doing better than most surrounding areas, but many of our nearby counties, unfortunately are not.
