The girlfriend of the man responsible for the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas on Sunday (Oct. 1) is back in the United States and facing questioning, as investigators continue to try to understand the motive behind the attack.

CNN reports that 64-year-old Stephen Paddock encouraged his girlfriend, Marilou Danley, to leave the country before he undertook the attacks, in which he killed 59 people and wounded more than 500 more in a rampage that authorities are now saying lasted from 9-11 minutes. He took his own life after the attacks.

Speaking to CNN's Australian affiliate 7 News with their faces blurred and their names not identified, Danley's sisters revealed that she was in the Philippines and arrived back in the U.S. on Tuesday (Oct. 3).

One of Danley's sisters said Danley "didn't even know that she was going to the Philippines, until Steve said, 'Marilou, I found you a cheap ticket to the Philippines.'"

"I know that she don't know anything [about the attacks] as well like us," Danley's other sister states. "She was sent away. She was away so that she will be not there to interfere with what he's planning."

"In that sense, I thank him for sparing my sister's life," she adds, saying that Danley was "really in love with Steve."

Investigators are not clear as to when Danley left the United States, but they say she flew into Manila from Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 15. She traveled to Hong Kong on Sept. 22, then returned to Manila on Sept. 25 before leaving Manila for the U.S. The 62-year-old was initially described as a "traveling companion" of Paddock's and a person of interest, but it's unclear what line of questioning authorities intend to pursue with her.

Adding to the mystery surrounding Paddock's possible motive and Danley's possible knowledge of his plans is the fact that Paddock recently wired $100,000 to the Philippines. The exact timeline of that money transfer has not been revealed publicly.

According to CNN, Danley landed in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. The FBI are accompanying her in Los Angeles, where Las Vegas police will question her.

Danley's sisters insist that she knew nothing about Paddock's intentions. One sister says she was "even (more) shocked than us" by his crime.

"No one can put the puzzles together, no one, except Marilou, because Steve is not here to talk anymore. Only Marilou can maybe help," the sister says. "If Marilou was there, this maybe as well didn't happen because she won't let it happen."
