Police have released more details about a predawn shooting Sunday that left a woman seriously injured and a juvenile in police custody.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, told local media Monday morning that his investigators worked a shooting near the intersection of 21st Street and Alston Avenue yesterday.

Kennedy said police believe a group of people met in the area around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, and "continued an ongoing argument they had been involved in for the last few days."

A juvenile male who was involved then drew a weapon and began shooting, and a woman was struck and injured badly. Kennedy said the victim made it to DCH Regional Medical Center and is being treated for serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

Kennedy said the VCU interviewed more than 10 people, located a suspect and searched his home, where they found the firearm used in the shooting and determined it had been stolen.

The juvenile suspect believed to be responsible was charged with first-degree assault, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and possessing a pistol while prohibited, and he has been placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

State law prohibits the VCU from releasing identifying information about juvenile suspects, although this one will be charged and prosecuted as an adult.

This investigation is not yet complete, though, and Kennedy said he expects charges will be filed regarding how the juvenile came to be in possession of a stolen firearm in the first place.
