As we continue to monitor the possibility of severe weather for Friday, January 9, there are a few important updates to share. With the next cold front moving toward Alabama, conditions may become favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop.

Timeframe

The primary timeframe for strong to severe storms is expected Friday afternoon through late evening; the current outlook points to 4 p.m. through midnight.

Risk Areas

Most West Alabama counties are under a Slight Risk by the Storm Prediction Center, with a few counties under a Marginal Risk.

Possible Threats

The National Weather Service in Birmingham said the primary threats are damaging winds, brief tornadoes, large hail, and heavy rainfall that can lead to localized flash flooding.

Growing Concerns

James Spann, Alabama Weather Network and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist, said, “The greatest concern is from heavy rain and potential flooding. Rain amounts over the northern third of the state will be in the 3-4 inch range, with 2-3 inches likely to the south for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston. A flash flood watch will likely be required.”

Also, Spann mentioned the threat being “very conditional.” “Some high-resolution models show no surface-based instability and no severe thunderstorm threat. But not all of them. IF sufficient instability is available, a few storms could produce strong winds and an isolated, brief tornado or two late Friday and Friday night.”

Stay Weather Aware

When active weather is possible, it’s always best to rely on the most up-to-date information, as changing conditions and new data can quickly shift the outlook.
