Police are beginning an investigation after a person was found dead near a boat landing on Lake Tuscaloosa Friday morning.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, told local media that they are with Tuscaloosa Police Officers and others at Sharpes Landing on Lake Tuscaloosa, where a person was found dead of unknown causes.

Their investigation just beginning, Kennedy said.

The Violent Crimes Unit responds to nearly all deaths outside of a hospital setting in Tuscaloosa County, and their presence does not necessarily suggest suspicion of criminal involvement.

UPDATE: Kennedy has released an update related to this case and said the first report came in around 10:30 Friday morning.

"A deceased individual had been found by workers who had arrived to do some work on the docks," Kennedy said. "At this time there is no reason to believe that this is a criminal matter, and out of respect for the privacy of the family, no other information will be released."
