A 47-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with capital murder after she allegedly shot and killed a young man who was in her car in a Northport neighborhood.

As the Thread previously reported, Northport Police and the Violent Crimes Unit were called to the 11400 block of Fairwood Avenue in Huntington Place in Northport around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday.

There, 28-year-old Hermaine Dashun Witherspoon had been shot several times - he was taken to an area hospital, but died quickly.

Police believe Witherspoon, a Tuscaloosa man, was acquainted with the alleged shooter, 47-year-old Joyce Reed, although the nature of their relationship was not clear.

Witnesses and physical evidence suggest Reed was standing outside of her car and shot Witherspoon as he sat inside it.

"There was no evidence that Mr. Witherspoon was armed prior to being shot," Sellers said.

Reed was arrested and charged with Capital Murder and is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond.

By the count of the Tuscaloosa Thread staff, this is the eleventh homicide the VCU has investigated so far in 2025.
