HPD claims an officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle at a park in Homewood when a person inside the car became combative, "engaged in a physical altercation with the officer and then produced a handgun."

In their statement, the police department said an officer-involved shooting then occurred without sharing specific details about how many shots were fired and by whom.

The officer was treated at the scene by medics and released, though HPD did not say what injuries they suffered, if any. The young man from the car was transported to UAB Hospital, but did not survive.

Homewood PD said the matter has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation.

On Tuesday, AL.com's Carol Robinson reported that the victim was Jabari Peoples, an 18-year-old who lived in Aliceville in neighboring Pickens County.
