Alabama Man Could Be Jailed For Cursing At An Officer
Can you imagine being threatened with jail time for cursing at a police officer? That's exactly what's happening to this Alabama man named Reginald Burks.
According to NBC News, 39 year old Burks was ordered by a judge to either apologize to the officer that gave him a ticket during a traffic stop or face up to 30 days in jail. Burks is said to have cursed at the officer.
“It’s not a curse word,” Burks, 39, said in an interview according to NBC News. “It’s in the Bible.”
Burks is said to have told the officer, “Get your a-- out of the way” after he received a ticket.
NBC News reports that Burks had to pay a fine and also write an apology to the officer for allegedly having cursed at him. Burks declined.
If he does not submit the letter at his next court appearance June 4, he will have to serve up to 30 days in jail, he and his attorney said.
“My client is being punished for a protected speech that has got nothing to do with the traffic situation, which to me is just good ol’ boy Alabama,” David Harrison, the attorney, said Monday. “And what I mean by that is that this system is not equal for African Americans and white people.”- NBC News
Do you think this man should serve time in jail? Was it all worth it or should he just follow the judges orders?
