This week we have been monitoring the possibility of severe weather impacting our coverage area Friday night into Saturday morning. As of right now, the storm system could bring our area strong to severe storms with severe level threats.

Timeline

The timing of this event is concerning because it is projected to start around Friday at 9:00 p.m. for our coverage and last until Saturday at 3:00 a.m. The overall system will go until 7 a.m. for other counties in Alabama.

The worrisome part is that this timeframe is what consider a “general” bedtime. Some people already have their phones set to silence at bedtime. I can’t stress enough to be sure that feature is turned off, so you can receive weather watches and warnings

Storm Prediction Center Risk Levels

James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist said that the “SPC has defined a "slight risk" (level 2/5) of severe storms for areas west of a line from Fort Payne to Verbena to Camden to Jackson. A "marginal risk" extends as far east and south as Opelika and Geneva.”

Possible Threats

“The surface and upper air synoptic pattern certainly favors severe thunderstorms... the main question involves the degree of surface-based instability available. This will likely be a linear event with the main threat coming from strong, potentially damaging straight-line winds, but a few tornadoes are very possible,” said Spann.
