I've lived here in Alabama for many, many years.

I've never seen anything like what I witnessed last night outside my home in Northport, Alabama.

As I was taking the trash out, I saw the biggest cockroach that I have ever seen in my more than 50 years.

I have seen a few things on social media about some big roaches running around West Alabama, so I didn't think too much about it.

The last thing I wanted was it coming inside, so I grabbed my trusty big jug of pest killin' juice with pump action I keep in the laundry room.

It's what happened next that threw me for a loop.

As I unloaded the chemicals on that creature, it opened its wings and flew right at me!

What is happening here?

The gigantic roach started to fly at me and then all around until it took off out of my sight.

When I say gigantic, I am talking at least three inches, and I believe closer to four inches.

I hate this story. It must be pointed out. I have never seen a flying roach in West Alabama.

I lived in South Alabama for years and NEVER saw one, and I was very close to the Florida state line.

I spoke with Clay Hahn, from Burnham-Hahn Exterminators in Tuscaloosa.

Clay told me lots about these flying cockroaches in Alabama.

In Alabama, the Smokybrown cockroach and the American cockroach are known for their ability to fly.

Smokybrown cockroaches are dark brown to black, have long wings, and are strong fliers, especially on humid nights. American cockroaches, while also capable of flight, are more prone to gliding than flying.

Here's a more detailed look at each type:

Smokybrown Cockroach

These cockroaches are dark brown to black and can be found in Alabama and other southeastern states. They have wings that extend past their bodies and are known for being strong fliers. They often seek out damp and humid areas.

American Cockroach

These cockroaches are reddish-brown and are among the largest house-invading cockroaches in the United States. They have wings and can fly short distances, but they are more likely to glide. They are commonly found in warm and moist environments.

Yeah, well, that's more than enough for me. I had no idea the flying you-know-whats had made it to our great state.
