George Strait, Blake Shelton Sign on for Televised Hurricane Harvey Benefit
George Strait and Blake Shelton are among the stars scheduled to take part in a televised concert to benefit Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief is scheduled to air live on Sept. 12.
The Hand in Hand telecast, a one-hour special, will broadcast live from Universal Studios in California, New York City's Times Square and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville; Shelton will host the Nashville portion of the event, while a performance by Strait, live from the Majestic Theater in San Antonio, Texas, will conclude the telecast, CMT reports.
In addition to Shelton and Strait, George Clooney, Jamie Foxx, Tori Kelly, Karlie Kloss, Beyoncé, Matt Lauer, Rob Lowe, Matthew McConaughey, Dennis Quaid, Julia Roberts, Kelly Rowland, Adam Sandler, Ryan Seacrest, Michael Strahan, Barbra Streisand, Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon, among others, have signed on to help out with the Hand in Hand telethon. Additional special guests will be announced in the coming days.
Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief will air at 8PM ET, and then again at 8PM PT, on CMT, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. The event will also be streamed internationally on Facebook and Twitter. Viewers will be able to donate via text, online and by phone; proceeds will benefit the United Way of Greater Houston, Habitat for Humanity, Save the Children, Direct Relief, Feeding Texas and the Mayor’s Fund for Hurricane Harvey Relief.
Since Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in late August, a number of country artists have stepped up to help raise money for and find other ways to support those affected. Strait, a Texas native, said on Twitter that he was "working on putting together relief efforts with the whole country music community;" it is unclear if Hand in Hand is that effort, or if something else is being planned as well.
