New Carrie Underwood Song, ‘The Champion’, Coming (Sort of) Soon
A new Carrie Underwood song, called "The Champion," is coming soon ... ish. According to Variety, the track will be used by NBC for their 2018 Super Bowl coverage.
As the website reports, NBC's Super Bowl coverage usually features a special version of Underwood's Sunday Night Football theme song from that season; however, in 2018, the network will use "The Champion."
“I think it’s going to become a sports anthem,” says Fred Gaudelli, SNF's executive producer. “It’s going to be one of those songs that you see cut to highlights for the next 25 years.”
Variety does not specify whether or not Underwood will release "The Champion" prior to the Super Bowl, or if it will only debut that night. At least one person has already gotten to hear the song, though: Underwood's husband, Mike Fisher. And he, the singer says, "loved it."
"He would listen to it before playoff games," Underwood says (Fisher was Nashville Predators captain during the team's 2017 Stanley Cup run). "He was like, ‘I want everyone to hear it!’ and I had to tell him, ‘You can’t do that. You can’t play it in the locker room. I’m sorry.’ But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track.”
On Sunday night (Sept. 10), Underwood's newest Sunday Night Football opening video debuted. She has already sung the SNF theme song for four years, since taking over for Faith Hill in 2013. Last season, Underwood replaced the old SNF theme, “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” with “Oh, Sunday Night,” a remake of “Somethin’ Bad,” originally a collaboration between Miranda Lambert and Underwood.
