The City of Aliceville will pay tribute to one of its lost sons by the renaming of a street.

Investigator Dornell Cousette was an officer with the Tuscaloosa Police Department when he was shot and killed while serving a warrant in September 2019.

Cousette, a veteran of the U.S. Army, is remembered as “one of the good guys” who would go out of his way to save the youth.  He was a resource officer in numerous Tuscaloosa-area schools and often worked security detail at DCH Regional Medical Center.

In February 2020, the City of Tuscaloosa named 35th Street in his honor; and now, he is receiving the same honor in his hometown.

Dornell Cousette was a native of Aliceville, Alabama. Before receiving an Advanced Diploma in 1998, Cousette could be seen taking the field as an Aliceville Yellow Jacket, and once the ball was in his hands, the other team could just take a break. As a matter of fact, Cousette was essential in the Yellow Jackets' 1997 AHSAA 3-A Championship by scoring two touchdowns in that game.

Dornell was one of the twins born to Mary Hall.  His twin, Marzell, finds Dornell’s untimely departure extremely hard to accept.  “A part of me went with him,” Marzell said. Their other brothers Juan and Nakia are taking it one day at a time, and seeing the impact Dornell left behind is inspiring.

Denise Hair remembers Cousette as both a classmate and church member. “Dornell was like a brother to me.  You know we grew up together at Garden of Eden (Church of God in Christ). So, when I first got the news, I was just stunned.  I think it’s great that Aliceville is doing something in his honor. He is so deserving.”

That, he is! Join the Aliceville community for the dedication of this street on Wednesday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m.
