It seems like there have been more and more recalls lately. These recalls range from household products, food items, hygiene products, and more. The latest round of recalls involves a chemical called benzene, which is classified as a human carcinogen.

What is Benzene?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Benzene is a chemical that is a colorless or light yellow liquid at room temperature. It has a sweet odor and is highly flammable. Benzene evaporates into the air very quickly. Its vapor is heavier than air and may sink into low-lying areas. Benzene dissolves only slightly in water and will float on top of water.”

A voluntary product recall has been issued by the Procter & Gamble Company. It includes products from “Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences, and Waterless produced in the United States.” This includes “aerosol dry conditioner spray products and aerosol dry shampoo spray products.” These products join a “previously discontinued aerosol dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food, due to the presence of benzene detected in some products,” which was noted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Here is the part that makes me nervous, “Benzene is widely used in the United States. It ranks in the top 20 chemicals for production volume,” said the CDC.

In a risk statement posted on the FDA website it said that “exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.” Also, they noted that “based on exposure modeling and the cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (IRIS database), daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences.”

In good news, the FDA mentioned that “The Procter & Gamble Company has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall and is conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution.”

Business Wire noted that if "If consumers have further questions, they can also seek more information via the Consumer Care team at 1-888-674-3631 from Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm EST."
