We've gone through the holidays, it's cold and we're spending more and more time inside.  Not a surprise that my wife started to come down with a nasty cold this week. She headed to the doctor of course, but she also decided to try the folk remedy of putting onions in your socks. We have friends in North Carolina that swear by it and head for the onions anytime they get the sniffles.

It might sound odd, but some people swear that it works.  Here's what you do.  Slice a red or white onion into rounds, place them on the bottoms of your feet, and put on a pair of socks. Leave the socks on overnight as you sleep. In the morning, you’ll wake up cured of your illness.

According to Healthline.com, the idea comes from the ancient Chinese medicinal practice of foot reflexology and dates back to the 1500's.  There are studies that prove that it works.  There are also no studies that show it doesn't work.  Most experts say putting onions in your socks won’t hurt you, but it probably won’t help, either. To get the full benefit from onions and to help your body recover from or prevent an illness, try eating them as part of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. To improve your odds, wash your hands, avoid contact with sick people, and consider getting a flu shot. Also, make sure you get enough sleep.

How did it work for my wife?  She woke up feeling a lot better!  But she was also in day 2 and had gotten a shot from the doctor so who knows.  Did it work?  Maybe, it was worth a try, but she did smell good this morning.
