Democrat Doug Jones is Alabama's Senate-Elect after defeating Republican Roy Moore in Tuesday's special election, and write-in votes are believed to have played a key role in the race.

Jones received 671,151 votes to Moore's 650,436. There were 22,819 total write-in votes in the election, an amount larger than Jones' margin of victory.

Many voters were unable to reconcile their desire to vote against Moore, who has been accused by multiple women of sexual assault, and their unwillingness to vote for Jones, leading them to write in candidates of their own choosing. There were even ads like the one above showing voters how to ensure their write-in votes were counted.
