Activities surrounding the annual MLK Holiday celebration have been announced.  Key guests include actor Danny Glover and gospel duo Mary Mary.

Each year, the Tuscaloosa community commemorates the birth of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a weekend of events, culminating on the date of his holiday observance.

This year’s Legacy Awards Banquet at the University of Alabama will be held at the Bryant Conference Center on Friday, January 12, 2018, where the guest speaker will be actor Danny Glover.  Individual tickets are $25, but tables of 10 may be reserved for $200.

Local civic leaders are also awarded at the banquet.  This year’s recipients include Rev. Frank Dukes, UA associate professor Ellen Griffith Spears, and UA student Marissa Navarro.

The doors of UA’s Moody Music Concert Hall will open on Sunday for the Realizing the Dream Concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Gospel superstar duo Mary Mary is set to perform. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the venue’s service offices.

Monday’s Unity Day events will be led by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and will include a Unity Breakfast at Beulah Baptist Church, which begins at 7 a.m. The speaker will be Joseph Scrivner, Pastor of Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church and Vice President of Student Affairs at Stillman College.

Following the Unity Breakfast will be a special documentary film viewing at the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy.  “Tell Them We are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities” will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Following the viewing, the Unity Day March will begin at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School at noon and will end at City Hall, where the crowd will be addressed by Rev. Tyshawn Gardner, Pastor of Plum Grove Baptist Church and President of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the SCLC.

The celebration will come to a close with a 6:00 p.m. Mass Rally at First African Baptist Church.  The speaker for this service will be Bishop L. Spenser Smith, Pastor of the Impact Nation Fellowship Church in Tuscaloosa and the Impact House in Birmingham.  Musical guests include the Stillman College Choir, Central High School Choir, and Westlawn Middle School Choir.

Because Dr. King had a dream of a society where men are judged based on the content of their character without limitations, ALL of these events are open for participation from ALL people!
